Great Canon of St. Andrew of Crete

During the First week of Lent, the Great Canon (i.e. rule or model of prayer) composed by St. Andrew of Crete is offered, along with the Great Compline service, in four parts at 5 pm on Monday through Thursday evenings.  The theme of the Great Canon is “Repentance“.

Thursday evening during the fifth week of Lent, the entire Great Canon is offered to the Lord commencing at 5 pm.  The service is approximately three hours in length but is well worth the struggle.

Frederica Mathewes Green has authored an excellent book containing and explaining the Great Canon entitled, “First Fruits of Prayer, A Forty-Day Journey Through the Canon of St. Andrew“.  It was published in 2006 by Paraclete Press (ISBN: 1-55725-469-9).
